I can tell you from experience I know of pretty much 2 signs that your hard drive will fail soon:
1. You hear a loud grinding or just vibrating comming from your hard drive.
2. You get a balloon popup on the task bar stating that files are being found corrupt. 1 or 2 of these notifications isnt too bad, but if you repeatedly get them multiple times each time you restart your computer, then you can pretty much know you need to back up your computer and get a new hard drive.

your computer starts getting really slugish and if you have windows XP like I do then when you log on to your file you have to wait for about 2 miutes because of a lot of popups and crap like that. When this happened i reinstalled the operating system. Also somtimes with no warning it just fails and you cant start your computer back up. Sometimes when your on a certain file you cannot open the disk drive this is a sign that you should stop what you are doing go into the file that you can get the disk out with and reinstall you operating system. Make sure you put anything you want to keep on back up disks before doing so.

unfortunately there arent any real signs. The only thing I can say from experience, is that the time it takes to access files on the hard drive will slow down. Also if you hear a griding noise when you try and access the HD, thats not good. Most of the time they go without warning. If it s a large hd...like 150gb or more, I would suggest putting a HD cooling fan on it, that will help to prolong the life of them.

There are different signs but you may not have enough experiences to find possible mine that is waiting to explode.
You can get software like this http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm that can check your harddrive.
There other that I used but I forgot what it called. This should be a good free software that work best for you.
If it pass with flying colors then I really think your system overheating a little. You can sets a house fan and blow it while the computer cover is off.
Send me a instant message through Yahoo messenger. My Yahoo messenger ID is teleprovider. Let me know what the program say about your harddrive.

i didn't have any signs before my hard drive died, like Michal said, the blue screen of death appeared and that was all she wrote. It crashed and never booted again. if you think there is a problem, back everything up now and buy a new hard drive now.

Ok, it might be loud, which is the platters inside it spinning at the wrong RPM's, you can get bad sector messages, it might not find the boot loader, check your BIOS to see if it is still listed as a installed corectly. Listin to a clicking noise, but post any new error messages that you might get and you can google search them as well.

First sign.... Reloading windows and your system is still running slow. Other than that, noise, programs not running right, slow crappy preformance but alot of these signs can be caused by other things as well. Your best bet is to back up all your info and reload windows. If you still have problems from there call tech support if under warrenty and get it replaced.

It will be noisy and the computer will hang occasionally as you use it. You can run a scan by going to my computer/them right click on C drive, and left click on properties, and left click on scan
