Personally I am running a Socket 939 AMD 3700+ and it is overclocked to 2.6Ghz. The best processor for gaming under $100 would be the AMD 4000+ it is $80 OEM at Newegg.com around $90 Retail. I would not recommend getting a Socket 939 though unless you already have a Socket 939 motherboard. Otherwise go for a Socket AM2 processor, at Newegg.com right now is the X2 3800+ at $109 Retail. I have seen this processor run Vista, and oblivion at the same time with a 7600GT and 2GB of RAM. I know its $9 bucks over $100 but it's the best for your money and its dual core. Don't settle for anything less you will be cheating yourself. Mike

from my standpoint having build a few gaming rigs and reviewing hardware for dtgeeks.com. I have to say to go with AMD for gaming. You also want to make sure you DO NOT buy OEM unless you are buying a heatsink and fan along site ht processor. AMD's box fans work perfectly well.

my rig runs an Athlon 64 +3500 socket 939

socket 939 is being phased out by manufacturers because of the new socket AM2 processors

to run most high-end games your going to need a good 1024megs of ram a 256 video card(at the least) and a 2.2gighrz processor

newegg.com is where ive always bought form, they haven't every messed anything up here are a few links for you

Athlon 64 X2 3600+

99 bucks at Newegg.

But, unless you can also afford 1GB memory, a 7600 video card (or higher), and a SATA drive, I'd cut back to a 3200 cpu and spend more on those things.
