About 3 months ago I built this new PC upgrading from a Pentium 2.8GHz processor with 1.75GB of RAM and good size harddrives to boot. (pardon the pun) However the machine that I have built has the following specs:

Core2 Duo -1.86GHz
1GB of RAM (so far)
2 - 200GB harddrives

My 2.8GHz P4 processor, speed-wise, was actually ahead of it's numbers and that included no over-clocking, etc. This new machine seems like it's running at about the same speed. It seemed like this was running much faster when I first installed the OS and programs for the first month or so, now, as I said, it seems like it's just a really fast Pentium 4. I expect FAR more out of this Core2 Duo. What can I check/do to speed it up, and please list anything and everything - maybe there's something I'm missing.

Windows XP isn't designed to make good use of multiple cores. Also, the Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit processor. You'd need a 64-bit OS like Mac OS X to see any significant performance gains, as well as 64-bit apps.

You are right, your 1.86 should outperform anything on the market at this time except it's bigger siblings. Check your antivirus and any other applications that you may have working in the background. Norton Antivirus is notorious for bogging down systems by working behind the scene. Make sure that you have a good anti spyware program also, as that can also slow your pc down. Control alt delete and then check your processes and performance. If there is a large % of CPU Usage, you probably have applications running in the background that you should check and see if they need to be running.

have you done the following...

defragmented your hard drive's
cleared all temp files
ran a spyware sweep
done a virus check
made the page file system managed
clean up the startup so unused programs are not starting up
maybe even adjust the visual options on windows

hope this helps
