i have a gateway celeron and windows xp....i run webroot spyware and nortont anti virus..
if i am using the computer, i leave it for a minute to say go to the bathroom, come back and the pc is frozen....all i know to do is hold in the start button for a few secs and it will turn off...then you can restart again.....any ideas. thanks

1. Might be Index service, which well, creates an index of your files and folders, but it's designed to run when the pc is idle. Doesn't normally freeze the pc as it is supposed to stop when the pc has activity. Also check to see what programs run while idle, ctrl-alt-del will bring up the task manager, look at the cpu usage % on the bottom.

2. Another thing to check is your power options, some computers don't do well if the pc goes into standby mode, assuming that yours is even doing that.

You can check by going to start, control panel, power options. Try turning standby off and see if that helps.

it could be a motherboard problem. it could be a problem with Xp considering that Xp has sooooooooo many ******* bugs! try burning all your important information to DVDs then format your hard drive and reinstal windows.

i might in simple terms initiate from scratch and reinstall homestead windows. trouble-free no fuss. If its the cmos settings then take out the battery of the mum board and wait slightly the replace it .

It might be the software you have installed on your computer. It may be slowing down your computer a lot.
