Whenever I start up my computer, it goes to the screen where it says Safe mode, Last known good configuration and Start windows normally. I have done all 3 with the following results:

Safe Mode: All the drivers load on the screen and once it gets to mup.sys it stops for roughly 10 seconds then the computer restarts.

Last Known Good configuration: Windows XP Loading screen comes up, about 2 bars go across then the computer restarts.

Start Windows Normally: Once again the windows xp loading screen comes up and does roughly 2 bars then restarts.

At first I suspected the power supply, so I replaced that with a brand new one and the same thing still happens. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

The computer had a few viruses and then they took over and kicked it into safe mode. Is it possible to reformat it and get it out of safe mode? Restore won't work apparently... what are the steps I have to take? Thanks!

I just built a computer with a motherboard I bought from my friend who upgraded his. I know it worked fine for him. Not sure of the manufacturer but it is a socket a board with a athlon 1800+ and 512mb ram. It comes on, cpu fan spins and hard drive and cdrom work but then shuts down after about 10 seconds. I cahnged the power supply and disconected the cdrom and floppy and reset the cmos jumper but didn't work.

Some files will not defrag and my available space stays the same. There is no error - just says unable to defragment certain files. Is there something I can do? I only have like 37% space available.

Almost every afternoon at work my PC turns off by itself. It does not happen at the exact same time each day. It does not seem to matter what program(s) I am running at the time. I cannot find anything that would cause this. I have checked for viruses and such. What the hay is going on?

I've built a new PC. When I press Del to enter setup, it displays the memory, then says USB controller detected but goes no further. The system hangs after POST. The hard drive is from a working PC with windows. The reset & on/ff buttons work, the CPU is correctly detected. I have an Asus k8v-vm m/b. The graphics are on-board. All fans are ok. Is it because I'm using a ps/2 102key keyboard from an old 486 PC(pre-Windows 95)?

I have an Compaq EVO d510 convertible mini tower (cmt). I am currently running a 220 watt ATX power source. Hp's quickspec on it reads as follows:

"ATX Power Supply – PFC with in 230V mode (115v/230V line switch)"

I don't know what PFC means, but I am looking into getting the following power source:

"Antec EarthWatts 380 Watt ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply"

The link to this item at CompUsa is:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200089+502481+9&Ne=500000&product_code=344088&Pn=EarthWatts_380_Watt_ATX12V_v2_0_Power_Supply

I'm looking for something that pumps at least 300 watts for my new AGP video card (nVidia geforce 6200). I thought this would do it, but since I'm not the most computer savvy with PSU's I thought I would double check with the community. Any other thoughts on this power source? Thanks everyone!!

PS: Does the video card have to be connected to the power source directly? If so, will this source connect to my AGP card?

Rather that some dullard spotty teen who thinks just cos he can play games on his system he's a know it all.

I know my PC crap better than most and the amount of ill informed answers I see in PC questions is staggering...

The cover all for the ignorent pc 'handyman' - if it doesn't work it must be broken. 'Screens flickering?... broke monitor, broke sound card'

Sorry, morning rant, I am just peeved at all the bad advice that gets thrown around here just for the sake of some spotty oick getting 2 more points.

I got it around 8 years ago. I probably have a few folders I might want to keep. Is there a quick way of downloading the files I want into an external drive? What kind of connection can I use? My current external drive has an USB port. I don't think they had that back then. Also, do I need to get a software to wipe off the hard drive if I want to donate it? Or could I just reformat it with the recovery disk? Thanks.
