I just built a computer with a motherboard I bought from my friend who upgraded his. I know it worked fine for him. Not sure of the manufacturer but it is a socket a board with a athlon 1800+ and 512mb ram. It comes on, cpu fan spins and hard drive and cdrom work but then shuts down after about 10 seconds. I cahnged the power supply and disconected the cdrom and floppy and reset the cmos jumper but didn't work.

Reduce the computer to it's base components. A motherboard, video card if it's not on board, power supply, memory and processor. Then try. Try the board out of the computer. Is it shorting out? Try also with known good parts if you can.
