Some files will not defrag and my available space stays the same. There is no error - just says unable to defragment certain files. Is there something I can do? I only have like 37% space available.

Defragging should be done in conjunction with disk cleanup, adware/spyware removal, virus scan, etc. I do this once a week. As the others have said, a defrag won't free up space, but it could help your computer run faster.

Some files that are currently in use by the operating system cannot be defragmented. If you have 3rd party defragmenting utilities, most of them offer a feature that allows you to defrag during bootup, insuring that no files have been loaded by the operating system during the process. These tools usually allow you to defrag the MFT and page file as well.

As for your free space, defragging does not delete anything, it just moves it around. To free up space you need to delete files and uninstall applications. Though, if there is nothing on your hard drive that needs or warrants deleting, 37% of free space is not bad. Defragging can maximize your free space - but it does not actually free up any space itself.

Defragging your drive will NOT create more space on it. it only puts the files in contiguous slots so that its easier for the hard drive to access them, therefore making the acccess faster, if you want more space, either delete some of the useless stuff off your drive or buy a second drive for more space

defragmenting just moves file around on the hard drive, it does not remove files to add space. Try using disk cleanup.
