Poking the eject button on the drive will stop it & open the tray.

PS Just reread the question. You want to cause a CD to not work? A strong magnet should scramble the contents, perhaps leaving it it on top of a speaker or something might do the trick.

are you talking about the drive or the disc?
if the disc then unless you specify a valid date from and end then no once the disc is burned it will work for as long as it is in good condition.
if it is the drive then the easiest way is to just disconnect the poser from the drive (open your computer case and pull out the power cable.
there is a piece of software i stummbled across on softpedia.com that is designed as a practical joke the publisher claims that no matter how many times a cd or dvd is placed in the drive it will just eject the disc until the software is removed.
however as this did not interest me i pais no attention to the name of the program sorry so you will have to search a bit. but it came up under a search for "clone drive" and freeware filtered.
I hope that helps a little.
so in short if you are burning discs to share with friends/family or trial ware then you should use your burners advanced features to set an expiry date.
good luck.

edit:
colin said use a strong magnet.
michael said two sylabels magnet.

cds are optical not magnetic media. so a magnet has no efect on a cd or dvd disc.

Yes this is a common fault with CD Roms because theyre "mechanical" and temperamental.

- Mechanical meaning moving parts create friction and wear and will eventually wear out

- Temperamental because moving parts, heat and dust can cause all sorts of problems

- Some Roms i've had in the past were lucky to burn 100 CD's before crapping out but at $50 for a new DVD/Burner its hardly worth the trouble repairing it

Stick it in the microwave! (as long as you don't do it long enough to melt the plastic, you'll screw up the data and it won't work in the computer.
