I have a 2004 Dell desktop. I went to turn the volume up, and well, there was no volume button! I went to my programs then accessories, and when I clicked on volume control, it says something like I need to install new hardware? Hmm. Now, why do I need to install new hardware for my sound? PLEASE TELL ME WHERE MY SOUND WENT?

Thanks!

A friend of mine helped me set up my custom built computer and every time i turn it on, it gets to a screen right before the desktop.

It says user accounts.

and it has my name.
I didnt set it for a password and am glad.

but

I am tired of having to click on my account name-pic everytime i log in.

How do i get rid of this so it will go straight to desktop in case i'm not siting there.

I went into user accounts and looked around but didnt see anything that said how to get rid of it.

My flat can get very cold this time of year and when I try to put my computer on it turns itself off and the light on the front just flashes, once my fire has been on and the room has warmed up, the computer is fine.

Why wont my computer work if it is cold? I hace asked someone with a degree in conmputers and they do not undetrstand why it does it!!

Is there anything I can do (apart from keep my heating on all the time) to stop this happening??

I am wanting to get Vista on my computer. I just got it custom built but could not afford at the time 100 extra to get a new system put in it (had a copy of XP Pro).

But i want to try to get the deal where you buy Pro or Home and get the Vista.

Ok here's my question and its in 2 parts.

1. What does Tech Vista upgrade mean? Does it mean i get a cupon and send it in for a full copy of Vista? Is it free?\

2. I once thought of geting XP 64 bit. My computer is a 64 bit computer. I saw for 130.00 or so, a XP 64 bit with Vista tech upgrade for sale. If i were to buy this would i get the 64 bit Vista with it?

please let me know any information you can on this.

Greetings Everyone!

I want to buy a new computer for my home and business use.

At home I use it for vids, photos, music and standard apps. I don't have the time to play many games.

I am going into business soon. We will open a language school and we want to do accounts, desktop publishing (fliers and newsletters) and making ads/worksheets. We need to be able to use English OS but Japanese language & software.

We will also be setting up a podcast service and we will want to do video-conferencing so that I can give lessons on the Internet. We need a good camera/mic setup.

I'm sick of buying things like System Mechanic, anti-spyware/virus etc. just to keep my Win-Tel machine running.

From now on I am getting reliability!

Should I buy

1 A cheap PC that runs Windows XP as i guess they will be getting cheap soon?
2 A new PC running Windows Vista?
3 An iMac? Thinking of the iMac 20" 2.16GHz 2GB, 250GB HD, SuperDrive.

his seems very debated, and my friend ALWAYS leaves his computer running, i turn mine off whenever it's not in use, and he argues the computers BETTER running than SHUT off daily. i know the hibernate feature is put there for a reason, but i have a hard time believing this. the question is, anyone experienced in computers, or very knowledgable that can put a squash to this rumor and tell me should your computer go off daily, hibernate, or is it okay to leave it on 24-7? my friend again, has his on 24-7 and his seems to be in good shape <.<...

Ive looked at two places, and they say opposite. Wikipedia says lower is better, but then the New Corsair Dominator is rated a 5-5-5-15 Latency, and Wikipedia said 2-2-2 is faster. So which is it? I know its the amount of clock cycles it takes to process the information, so, it seems logically the lower the better. But, if thats the case, then how is the Corsair Dominator rated pc 8600 as well as the fastest DDR2 Ram available when its 5-5-5-?

BIOS is saying my CPU (AMD Barton 3000+, not overclocked) is running between the mid 60's (while idle) to 80+ degrees, but PC Wizard says it is the PSU that is running at that temp, while the CPU is around the mid twenties.

I would assume BIOS is correct, but why are the readings so different?

Here's a link to my PSU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1030240&CatId=1077

About the high temperature, I recently applied thermal paste (we didn't apply it when we bought it 2+ years ago, but I would imagine it came with some on it) and it seemed to make a difference at first, but it's still obviously way too hot. I'm pretty sure it's been running at high temperatures since I got it, but it's been getting worse.
Also, when I put my hand by the fan of the PSU, it doesn't feel hot.

At this point, I'm not really sure what to do.

My computer has gotten quite slow the past year or two and it might have some worms or viruses.
these are some of the things I can't do anymore:
- can't access Internet Explorer or Windows media player and i have to use other alternatives for them
- cant access the task manager
- cant search for a file in my comp.
- cant' open a simple text document without it closing right away
- keep getting error messages every time i close a folder
- and much more..

will getting a new hard drive fix all my problems?
