Greetings Everyone!

I want to buy a new computer for my home and business use.

At home I use it for vids, photos, music and standard apps. I don't have the time to play many games.

I am going into business soon. We will open a language school and we want to do accounts, desktop publishing (fliers and newsletters) and making ads/worksheets. We need to be able to use English OS but Japanese language & software.

We will also be setting up a podcast service and we will want to do video-conferencing so that I can give lessons on the Internet. We need a good camera/mic setup.

I'm sick of buying things like System Mechanic, anti-spyware/virus etc. just to keep my Win-Tel machine running.

From now on I am getting reliability!

Should I buy

1 A cheap PC that runs Windows XP as i guess they will be getting cheap soon?
2 A new PC running Windows Vista?
3 An iMac? Thinking of the iMac 20" 2.16GHz 2GB, 250GB HD, SuperDrive.

get the iMac

- I have been a PC user and a mac use for over 6 years...

I have 2 PC's (Dell, and a shuttle) and I have 2 macs (ibook and a iMac).... mac is far better for these reasons...

the machines are more stable, faster, easier to maintian, and there is much more attention to detial as far as product design and UI. Also with the new macs you can run both windows and OSx no problem...

Now both my PC's run like poop. They are slow.. I am constantly having problems with spy whare and viruses... and they are clunky... and my shuttle is a pretty beefy system.

Now if you do by a mac here is a tip:
I recomend you get it maxed with ram... Don't go with the first option on RAM...

And get the extra support... While i find macs are the better product they can have some flaws (nothing is 100% perfect). The support will cover most of the big problems...

Also if you get the iMac do not install the extended screen hack... this can lead to some other flaws later on...

Have fun =o)

The best thing to do is to check for software you're requiring; japanese software would be primarily what I'm referring to with this. Desktop publishing isnt going to be hard to find, there are many programs out for both Windows and OSX. I personally build my PCs and currently run Windows XP however I was given a Macbook for Christmas and actually prefer it over my regular PC. The Mac is extremely easy to use, seems faster and is more secure. You just have to do a little research to see which you would benefit from more, but I would suggest the iMac if you can find the software you require.

Get the iMac. For what you're wanting, it has everything pre-built into the operating system. Also, the new version of OS X that's coming out soon has a lot of great new features, so that will be another thing to look forward to.

You can not run Windows software on a MAC. You would have to load bootcamp then install Windows and use it to run Windows apps. Also, iMAC duo core has been out for awhile now.

i myself use windows xp and i have all the software like system mechanic etc and for me these things are working fine.
windows is known for a lot of compatible programs available in market and windows based pc's are cheap and easy to upgrade. but as all know windows is also plagued by stability issues and alos worms and viruses add to that pain. so u have to go in for antiviruses and good reliable ones like norton and then u have to have your antivirus definitions subscription renewed and all and this all can be a real pain in the neck.
if u want to bypass all this, definitely go in for the mac, mac is fast, stable, has better performance... but the only let down is that there are not enough compatible programs written for these computers...
