My flat can get very cold this time of year and when I try to put my computer on it turns itself off and the light on the front just flashes, once my fire has been on and the room has warmed up, the computer is fine.

Why wont my computer work if it is cold? I hace asked someone with a degree in conmputers and they do not undetrstand why it does it!!

Is there anything I can do (apart from keep my heating on all the time) to stop this happening??

The problem is that most materials shrink as the temp drops, if it gets cold enough, plug and jack type connections lose contact, and soldered connections are placed under great strain and can break.
Computers are fine if the temp does not get below 40 degrees F, but if it is in the low 30's or lower, thats when the problems start

I would actually suggest condensation as well. Is there a lot of condensation forming on the windows in the house? If so, then potentially you may have the same in the PC as well, which could be causing an electrical short of some kind. The heating would dry the air out and therefore help it work once again.

The flashing light on the front, I'm guessing is on the monitor, and not the PC base unit. If it is, then it just means that the monitor is turned on with no signal recieved from the PC (which happens when it's turned off).

That's my guess, which has been mentioned before so, if it turns out to be that then feel free to give one of the others the best answer :-)

Hope you get it sorted anyway. PC's are great when they work, a real pain in the bum when they don't!

Technically it is heat that is the big problem for computers. Most people are trying to keep their computer as cool as possible. Is it an electric fire in the room? There may be some weird electrical problem. Try shutting off the breaker for the room and switching back on. Other than that the only thing I could think of would be condensation from the change in temperatures or a faulty power supply in the computer.
Have a look at this forum.

Never heard of this one before!

Couple of things to try though...

1) Try updating the motherboard BIOS. Might be a bug in the firmware which is not able to deal with low readings from the temp sensor.

2) Unlikley, but could be condensation forming in the computer, but this is normally only a problem with Active cooling systems.

Computers generate quite a bit of heat. Electronics are sensitive to moisture, so often have a cutoff to prevent damage if temperature differentials may result in condensation. There are commercial laptop warmers which are designed to safely keep them warm -- don't try to improvise. I don't know if there are similar devices for desktops.

Better look at the CMOS setup of your flat then see if the Temperature Monitor is properly configured. Coz some cmos has this feature like when the temperature is so hot it will automatically shut off and in your case if its so cold.... it will did the same thing i guess.. lol

im not an expert with computers but a guess could be the fan in the computer because it doesnt have anything to cool down when its cold in the flat the computer doesnt know what to do causing it to shut down whereas when its hot the fan has to keep the processor cool and all of its jobs can be maintained and function. do not trust me i am only guessing and i am only doing my AS level in ICT with teachers who dont know what they are doing.

that is really weird sounding..
for one thing cooling is what keeps a computer running. without it you'd fry your computer.

in the navy they have to keep computer rooms so cold people wear sweaters.

and a normal computer cant get hot either.
