Well, GHz and MHz are processor speeds. Dual core chips, even if the listed speed is the same, work way faster than normal ones, as they have 2 cores. Since you download movies (NOT ILLEGAL, IN CONTRAST TO WHAT THE FIRST GUY SAID.
i-Tunes offers movie downloads. iTunes is not illegal.)
you will need a big Hard Drive. Go for 500 gigabytes in a Desktop or 160 gigabytes on a laptop.
Then look at the RAM (Random Access Memory).
I would suggest 2 gigabytes of RAM for both Desktop or Laptop.
However, buy one with 1 gigabyte of RAM, then buy another 1 gigabyte and put it in.
Make sure the computer has an optical DVD Drive (which can play DVDs as well as normal CDs. Many softwares and games also come in DVD format).
I would suggest a Logitech Wireless Optical Keyboard (any one) and a Logitech G5 Wireless Laser Entertainment mouse.
You will get all this under $1700 = 550 pounds.

I hope this helped.

Good Luck and Happy Computing!

Well the hard drive is where information gets stored. 250 GB is pretty hefty, it'll hold alot of movies. 1GB of ram is a little on the lean side for serious gaming these days, think of it like short term memory, the more you have the less often you need to pick up a book for the answer. Best advice I can give you when picking a computer out of a flyer or something: many "bargain" computers use onboard video hardware. This is fine for everything except serious gaming, so if you see "onboard video" in the description avoid it. You want something that says "video card". Beyond that, pretty much the more you spend the better games you'll be able to play, what sort of games do you like?

for that much you would want to get a computer with an ethernet connection (pretty basic) for high speed downloading. at least a 3 GHz processor and definitely a good sound card and video card. i would suggest a Creative X-Fi sound card and an ATI video card because they have user friendly software.
