I study your further info and the priority is so easy, Many laptop on marketplace are synthetic to artwork with comparable volume of Ram, occasion, if your laptop has 2 slots each might desire to have the comparable volume of Ram in accordance of your laptop's standards. So if there's a stick of 256mb of ram and you go with for to enhance you'll be able to desire to upload a stick of 256mb of ram, it is comparable, you may no longer use the two 256mb and 1gb on the comparable time. I propose 1gb be used together as you purchase yet another stick.

You probably have an on-board video card that is taking up 32 MB's of RAM. This is a very common occurrence.

Ram is actually rounded. Also, Kieth is right. Some memory is used for video. You can't do anything about it in most cases. So if you buy a new laptop with 256Mb, you will most likely only get 224Mb which just isn't enough. So you will want to just buy more RAM. At least a stick of 512Mb minimum. But I would go with 1G at least to avoid any limits that would be noticeable.

Your video card is using the missing 32meg. Since it is not available to you, Windows does not list it when it shows the memory size. Normal.
