I friend of mine just called to ask what does one long, continous beep mean when starting the computer up?

The computer makes ONE long continuous beep noise as long as the computer is on, and never boots to Windows XP.

This is an HP Athlon XP 3000+ processor with 512 mb.

I think it may be the memory or the video but I'd like to know for sure before I go over to her house.

What do you think?
I think there has to be a connection some where to the windows and the viruses. Since apparently this does not happen with MACS. You know like may be the manufactures who make the costly up dates and want to coax people into buying their costly upgrades by frusterating people into updating via the use of viruses and the fear of losing your lifes savings.. Some will say it is a conspiracy theory but follow the money who benefits when viruses infect systems? Some say the hacker but really so does windows or microsoft because you have to up date then or buy new. I have also have noticed that there is advanced notice of new viruses announced on the news before they appear with a release date. Are they physic? how can they know what joe blow computer hacker is planning?
Also coincidental that even though computers and viruses are so complex that an average Joe blow in Caynan knows more about how to infect MS Win that our educated than MS employees knows to fix it HMMMM

I just got a new Dell computer, and it is supposed to have 4GB of RAM. The chips are there, 4 - 1GB chips, but when I go to my System Profile screen it shows that I only have 3GB of RAM. Is there any way to check and see if I have a bad chip, or is there anything else that could cause it to show the wrong amount of RAM?

For all of you MAC users out there Is it really true that you can surf the net even download songs with out getting computer viruses?
If so WOW. What a money saver. I bet alot more people will be switching to MACS before they chose to up-date to the new Vista Which is costly!

I'm asking this question for a friend who is having this problem. Normally, she would keep her desktop computer at home. She been traveling with her computer over to her friend’s house & left it here. Then turned around & took it home with her. It was working fine the first night back & she didn’t have ANY problems. The next day she turn it on, she got a black screen saying:

VGA Input: No input Signal
Recommended system: 1280x1024 – 60hz

I haven’t did trouble shooting & repair in quite some time but, wouldn’t that screen mean her Video Card is loose or burned out?

All cables are in correctly & they are in working order. This is a older computer, with most of it cards & components updated. I do know it’s a Hewlett Packard Pavilion – 859c (1999 model) & a HP vs 17e 17” flat-panel LCD Monitor. She also uses Windows XP. Please help if you can.

I want to build my first computer to edit and burn home family pictures and vhs and 8mm tapes. My problem, my ADS Pyro A/V Link (converts analog to digital) that I have requires firewire.

The motherboard I want to purchase does not have firewire, it has USB 2.0.

Is it advisable to buy and install a PCI card in order to have the firewire capability or would you select another mobo that already has firewire?
