I friend of mine just called to ask what does one long, continous beep mean when starting the computer up?

The computer makes ONE long continuous beep noise as long as the computer is on, and never boots to Windows XP.

This is an HP Athlon XP 3000+ processor with 512 mb.

I think it may be the memory or the video but I'd like to know for sure before I go over to her house.

Unplug the keyboard and try to start the computer. If the beep still occurs make sure all internal components and cables are seated properly. The last cause could be RAM.

Continuous Beep No Power, Loose Card, or Short.

You need to find out what BIOS is on your motherboard. Various BIOS supplies have different beep codes that are specific to them. That one continuous beep may mean one thing on a motherboard but will mean something quite different on a different one.

Good luck

For my computer it means that it is overheating. You may need to shut it off and put a fan in front of it, that always works for me

Good Luck

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

This means that your computer probably needs new memory.
