I purchased an SATA harddrive but when i opened my computer up there was an ide drive installed.Are there such cables thaat i can buy that will convert the old ide cables to work with the SATA hard drive?

1. You DON'T want to do that. SATA is SO MUCH FASTER than IDE.
2. If you have ONLY IDE connectors on your motherboard, then you will not have drivers to make it work anyway. SO - Go buy an IDE.

OH - OK - you could get an interface card, too.

Answer 2. Do not scrap anything. Is the Compaq board Sata Compatible? Or did the purcase of the so called chip exist as a requirement to run SATA??? This question I ask is very important in solving ur problem. Dude Compaq limits all we can do, with our systems. But if u give the right info I think ur problem can be resolved. What the h--l do u mean by a chip? An expansion board???

Your motherboard has to have an onboard SATA port. That's where you start first.

Yes there are IDE to SATA adapters.

You could get an adapter or a card for your computer that will add SATA capability.
