I want to build my first computer to edit and burn home family pictures and vhs and 8mm tapes. My problem, my ADS Pyro A/V Link (converts analog to digital) that I have requires firewire.

The motherboard I want to purchase does not have firewire, it has USB 2.0.

Is it advisable to buy and install a PCI card in order to have the firewire capability or would you select another mobo that already has firewire?

Is firewire going to be phased out anytime soon?

I ask this since it seems USB is more prevelent these days.

because they've been working on making usb faster (i.e. 2.0 and soon to be 3.0 I'm sure) and it caught enough market fire to become more of a standard.

If you have a peripheral device like a video camera which uses firewire that you'll need that port to connect. In any case, a pci card with firewire would still be limited to the pci bus speed.

Part of the reason is political...firewire was developed by Apple Computer, Inc. and therefore was not originally a PC specification, long before the USB specification was finalized. It was also faster than the original USB spec but about the same speed as USB 2.0.

Installing a PCI card is a very good option as well as a "Firewire to USB" adapter. You would get the best performance from the PCI card, however.

all of the above noted to be true .... and keep in mind you and run 192 USB devices on a single hub

I would buy a regular pci card and put it in to use firewire, I would not use an adapter from usb to firewire, you'd be transferring at a slower speed, and the point is to transfer at the fastest speed. If you already bought a motherboard without firewire, just buy the card. If you haven't purchased the motherboard yet, buy one with firewire. Check out newegg.com, most motherboards come with firewire onboard now.

USB2.0 is faster than firewire. Firewire never caught on and like it was stated, it was an Apple thing. Since the vast bulk of the desktop computer market is not Apple and USB2.0 came out before firewire got an momentum, it has kind of just faded away.

I have read that there is supposed to be a new version of firewire that will be faster than USB2.0 but that may be just rumor.
