You should put the 1GB stick in slot 1, & the 256MB is slot 2.
If your mobo has 4 slots, the slots are numbered like this 1|3|2|4

In general, you can just add it in the next free slot, but some mobos prefer the largest stick to be in the first slot, so I usually swap the 256MB stick into the second slot. If you provide the model number on www.memorygiant.com or www.crucial com they can tell you if you need to. Or you can try it in the second slot and if your computer shows the correct amount of RAM, you're golden.

no you dont need to...
but if your motherboard has only 2 slots of RAM and most of 1 GB requires 2 slots than you will have to remove the 256 MB RAM

but if you have 3 slots that you defintely dont need to actually that will increase your ram to like 1280 MB rather that just 1 GB which is 1024 MB
