I am ordering a computer and I have the choice of ordering 1 GB of RAM in two ways: Either a single 1 GB RAM chip -or- 2 512-MB RAM Chips. Both options cost the same. Is there any reason (performance, upgrade path, stability, etc) to choose one option over the other?

So you know the computer mice that have the laser underneath instead of the ball thing....? Well is it bad if you look at them? Could it damage your eyes? Because I don't think it could..but my mom does. SO. Does anyone know the answer?

My Sony VAIO is getting close to 5 years old, and Photoshop chugs, and most games won't play on it anymore (sigh).
Any suggestions for a new, good desktop PC for handling games as well as the memory-extensive Photoshop stuff I work with?

I'd prefer not to build it myself (I know this is cheaper, but I'd rather just buy the PC new.) Also desktop, not a laptop.

I don't need a complete package either, just a new PC box.

Ideas?

Just built a "new" pc (spec below) from some brand new components and some old ones. When i power up the unit all the fans and lights come on as they should but then it just dies and the only way i can get the pc to power up again is to pull the kettle lead from the back and plug it back in again.
SPEC
AMD Athlon XP 3000 (old)
Aspire ATX-AS420w PSU (new)
ASRock microAtx Motherboard K7541 (new)
2x 512Mb PC3200 DDR Ram (1 old , 1 new)
LG 512 DVD Rw
Western Digital 80 Gb Hdd

I also have an Ati Sapphire Graphics card and a creative live 5.1 sound card, but havn't installed these yet as the new motherboard has onboard sound and graphics.

Please help this is really starting to pee me off !!

My old computer is now close to obsolete, and can no longer run demanding applications. I am planning to build a computer with custom parts. I have a $4000 budget to work with, and these are the components I am currently buying. PROCESSOR: Intel Core Duo clocking at 3.6 GhZ - RAM Mem: 2 GB - Video RAM: 512 MB nVidia 7900 GTX. I run enterprise level applications working with intense graphics and programs such as FLASH MX Director, FLASH 8, Photoshop CS2, and many others, is this a good configuration? Is there anything else I should buy or change? right now, I am using about $1900 of my budget.

Hi,

We are buying our first home computer and looking for some advice. So far we have both always used PCs but I hear good things about Apples. Our main uses would be: surfing the internet, photo storage, music storage, building and maintaining a website, using email, recording music and creating/editing word documents. We don't envisage doing any gaming or graphic design type things. How do Apples and comparably priced PCs compare on these things?

Neither of us are particluarly computer literate so a relevant consideration is whether we could get to grips with how the Apple works. Do not want to spend a lot of time learning how it works.

Thanks!

I am thinking of building a new computer. Can anyone explain the differences, pros and cons of dual core vs. dual processor?

Right now I am leaning to a Tyan S2875ANRF Dual Socket 940 main board with 2 gig of ram and twin 2.2 GHz AMD Opteron 248 SledgeHammer processors.

whats the difference going with this configuration vs say a 3.7 GHz Dual core?

What maker does Alienware use for some parts of their hardware, such as the hard drive or the memory? Do they use 'Alienware' brand? For example, their video cards are nVidia based, but who's the make?

Some examples of hard drive makes are Western Digital and Samsung... Example of a memory maker is Kingston.

So does Alienware manufacture their own branded hardware?

I don't do alot of multi tasking, so I want to take one of these two 2.5 G5 cpus and put it inside another Power Mac whose stock speed is 1.6.
Now in the same situation, Suppose the 2.5 desktop runs DDR2, and the 1.6 desktop that's getting the CPU changed is running on DDR.
Also will it matter if the old 1.6 Power Mac is a 2003 model and the 2.5 Power Mac is late 2005/early 2006?
Seriously, I want blazing speed, and I hardly encounter tasks that require a second CPU. I just want to know if I can combine a 2.5 G5 pull with a old Power Mac 1.6 desktop.

I'm buying a new PC. What is Intel's newest processor called? Or is it out yet? I would go with Intel except AMD is significanlty less expensive. I'm not buying the PC for gaming but would like to run Photoshop and audio editing software without problems. What should I do?

I Have a Dell Dimension 8300. The computer does not recognize the D; or E: drives. I have made sure they are connected porperly, I can push the fron button and open both drives, but after that nothing happens. I tried control panel and divice manager, but the drives are not listed in the "drives" section, only the C drive appears.
