please do not go for intel.Go for AMD processors. They are the only 64 bit processors avialable now.Even though they have lower clockspped and cache memory they work on a different architecture when compared to intel.1.8ghz of AMD is equal to 3ghz of intel and they are much cheaper than intel since they spend less on their ads alike intel

Go for the latest technology. The technology that is rocking now is Dual core technology. Intel has poured lot of money for developing this technology.
So go for the following configuration
Pentium Dual2Core 2.8 GHz, 800 MHZ
1 or 2 GB of RAM
160 GB Harddisk
MSI Motherboard and Intel Chipset.
Get this one and see, u'll have a rocking system.

Dual core is certainly better than P4. Go for Dual core for Dual speed, Dual performance. Dual is the 'in' thing.

hate to say it but rdram's right, I've seen 98 run on a 486 and xp home run on a P2 - 300. it depends what you want to do with it, if you put 500 - 1 gig of ram in there and keep the system clean there won't be anything you won't be able to run. For home users it really gets to the point where you have to ask "what's the point?"

Go with the 800bus speed. That's the 'width' of the data highway. Dual core ROCKS.

the second one is totally better. it is like having two 2.8 ghz processors rather than one 3.06. it will get great for games.
