What maker does Alienware use for some parts of their hardware, such as the hard drive or the memory? Do they use 'Alienware' brand? For example, their video cards are nVidia based, but who's the make?

Some examples of hard drive makes are Western Digital and Samsung... Example of a memory maker is Kingston.

So does Alienware manufacture their own branded hardware?

Just like other major vendors such as Dell and Gateway, Alienware does not manufacture hard drives and other components. They might do their power supply and custom BIOS, but usually that's as far as most go these days. It is too cheap of an option just to grab aftermarket hardware for everything else. For example, Dell uses Samsung CD and DVD drives. Gateway often goes with Maxtor hard drives.

I'm not sure if there is a set pattern or not, though. I've seen a good mix of brands in different models from Dell and other retailers.

I agree with earlier responses. Most manufacturers use ready made components to 'build' their computers.

If you are concerned about which manufacturers are used, why not get in touch with Alienware themselves and ask. You may be able to stipulate which hardware you want installing, though this will doubtless cost you more.
