I Have a Dell Dimension 8300. The computer does not recognize the D; or E: drives. I have made sure they are connected porperly, I can push the fron button and open both drives, but after that nothing happens. I tried control panel and divice manager, but the drives are not listed in the "drives" section, only the C drive appears.

If the the jumpers are set correctly, (master/slave) or (cable select/cable select) then the cable that connects then both to the motherboard may be loose or damaged.

It seems unlikely that two drives would break at the same time.

You don't really tell us, but by your saying you push the front buttons - may we correctly assume that you are talking about 2 CD and/or DVD players?

The problem here is that by your openning the case and messing with the cables, you've possibly altered the factory-shipped configuration which makes it very hard to troubleshoot.

Try this...
1. Disconnect and pull out both D and E drives. If both drives are identical then mark one with a marker to help identify while one you are working with later on. Close the cover and reboot your computer. Test to ensure all works well.

2. PC off, cover open. Choose one of the drives, either D or E, and connect it to the power and data cables you took off earlier.

3. If it works, the remove it and put it off to the side. Grab the other drive and connect it. Boot up and see if it works. The goal is to remove all else and make sure that both drives are working. If they are then the pins may be wrong. If neither drive worked when you connected them and booted up -- then try the other data cable available and repeat the above steps to test both drives.

4. By the time you've reached this point you've spent a lot of personal time on this already and still don't have use of your drives. Find your local Best Buy or other computer shop and pay the minial fee to get your PC in operation.

All answers are right so far just one more thing check that your Bios is not set to Off or None on IDE 0 (seondary)(slave) and IDE 1(master or slave) some systems use sligtly different Names Try to set all IDE setings to auto. But check your Harddrive settings if it is set to csl then you should have the black part of the Ide cable there .
The gray should be on the Main CD/DVD ROM drive also set to CSL or The HDD Master and the CD/DVD rom to slave.
Furthermore on the second IDE your other CD?DVD ROM you should set to Master and any other devices you select there after to slave, but if you fit another Hardrive on the Secondary IDE make him the Master.
Take care!

Check the jumper settings. Most likely they are not set right for the postion they are in. Look on the drive and it should say where the settings should be. Or you can usually go to the manufaturers website and find the settings too.
