You did not say what OpSys you are using.
If it is WinXP try this,
Open My Computer
Right click on your main disk drive, probably C:
Left click on Properties
Left click on Tools tab
Left click on Check Now
Check both boxes
Left click on Start
This will scan your disk drive and attempt to fix any error it finds.
It may take some time depending on the size of your hard disk.
Just be patient.
When the scan is finished, reboot your system.
Hope this helps.
Have fun but be safe.

Could be a Driver issue. Go through all your drivers to make sure they are updated with Windows Hardware Compatiblity Published Drivers. I had an issue with my wireless adapter's driver, and since making sure ALL my drivers were WHQL certifies, have had no problems.

When was the last time you opened up your computer case and blew out all the dust, especially on your processor and its fan? Dust buildup can cause overheating which would shut you down.
