2GB is overkill for an older system. We should be asking you what it is that you're looking to accomplish here.

From the sound of it, you're system is probably 2-4 years old running an older Athlon XP or Pentium 4. It's probably slowed down due to heavy installs and uninstalls of software, which accumulates junk in your registry. Also, there's the possibility of spyware and virus infections that are easy to get these days just from web surfing.

We would need more details to tell you for sure what the right move is, but I'd say upgrade to at least 512MB of RAM (1GB tops) and look to save money towards your next system instead of going overboard here. Likely a reformat of your hard drive and clean install of Windows would show the most improvement.

As for your question, any DDR module PC2700 or higher will work just fine. You don't want to go with anything slower unless your CPU uses the slower speed (you can tell by the type you have in there now and looking in the BIOS). Typically, it's just easier to match what you have now with another module rated at the same speed. You can match it easily at http://www.crucial.com

You can also look at http://www.newegg.com or http://www.pricewatch.com but be sure to look for decent name brands like Micron, Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, Patriot, or Samsung...

PC2700 and PC2100 are both DDR. DDR2 starts at PC3200 and above.

With memory prices so low, now is the time to max out that RAM!! Avoid the cheap stuff, as it causes too many problems. The middle of the road RAM works fine in most cases. If possible, buy the RAM with an aluminum heat sink already attached.

Good luck!

you might be able to but I would do 2 - 1 Gig modules, it's cheaper and the memory would be allocated better, Take a look at this site, and pose the question there, or the answer may already be there, you can download a small app that can scan the pc and recommend the correct modules of memory for you.. Good Luck

all the new RAM are backward compatible, but if u put a 400MHz speed RAM in a 333Mhz mobo, the max speed it can reaches is only 333Mhz.

Please stick to reputable brand name for the RAM

Yes, stick to name brands though, they made all DDR1 memory backwards compatible.
