Command prompt is the DOS emulator....in XP that is...DOS doesn't exist in XP like it did in previous versions of Windows.

MS-DOS _IS_ the command prompt. There is no 'user interface'. DOS isn't available in XP, it's too old of a technology. If you have an old machine with DOS loaded, it will 'come up' that way with C:\
ahh, those were the days...

If you want to boot your computer into a command shell and skip Windows, then press the F8 key while booting and select Command Shell from the menu.

Dave has it wright, contrary to popular belief dos is still there in xp, same files diff names, it is buried sooo deep because most people don't know how to use it. i haven't tried this yet but 95 uses ntfs same as xp so a 95 boot disk should give you access to the files on an xp hard drive. should.
