I got a new case with a 400 watt powersupply, a new motherboard and a new processor with fan.. I put together the whole thing and connected all the wires and everything looks fine but for some reason when i turn on the comp it won't turn on.. Its just there it doesn't do anything.. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't use the SATA cable cuz i removed the harddrive from my old comp n put it in the new case n my old harddrive was an IDE harddrive.. So, I'm just wondering if I need to connect the SATA cable somewhere r should i just leave it alone?? n what could possibly be the problem?? any suggestions..

8 year old Compaq Presario, win 98, 64 MB ram, 9 GB hard disk, integrated video card. later, I installed cd-rw and ethernet card.

should I give away? or
how much should I ask for?
do you think I should remove the CD-RW and ethernet card and sell them since those were mine?

do you think someone will even buy it?

I know this seems like a mundane detail, but on a computer with an Athlon Dual Core processor and 1 gigabyte of ram, why would playing a game (like The Sims 2) cause the minimize and maximize animations of all windows to be choppy and slow after closing the game down? I tried adjusting the refresh rate and updating my graphics card drivers, but to no avail... It is interesting though, that the issue is temporarily resolved if I change the screen's color quality to 16 bit and back again to 32 bit, but the same thing just happens again when the game is launched the next time. How can I remedy this?

I'm building a system and can't figure this one out. I've got an Abit IL8 Motherboard, 1 GB PC2 5300 DDR2, Pentium D 940 3.2 GHz, Powercolor PCIe X800 GTO, 500 W PSU (aftermarket...set to 115v), Seagate 250GB SATA2 HDD. Hooked up, the system powers up, but anywhere from 5 seconds to 1 minute it shuts down. I strip it down to barebones with only the video, CPU and fan, RAM, MB, and PSU, and it still does it. I pull the ATX12v1 connector, and it stays up but I never get any video. I've gone out and temporarily bought a new MB, RAM, and CPU, but the thing still does it. The only thing I haven't tried replacing the Video card. For the life of me, a bad video card doesn't make sense as to why it would keep shutting down since I do get video while it's up. Any ideas? I'm about to go out tomorrow and buy and new video and MB from another manufacturer...and if i get it running, i return what i don't want. Ideas?

OK, this is a Dell Optiplex GX280. I got blue screen while my boss was trying to copy files onto my computer over the network today. Could be HDD crash. System was kept up-to-date with patches and virusScan updates. Virus seems doubtful, but of course is always possible. Too impatient (I know, I know) during memory dump--cold booted at about 31%. Now, when it boots I get "Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Winnt_root\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file." I try boot floppy with ntldr, boot.ini, and ntdetect.exe on it. Same error. I try windows recovery process with install CD. It says there's no hard disks found. This system uses SATA...do Dell Optiplex GX280s need a driver for SATA for Windows 2000 Server install? Did that cold boot just trash the drive? If so, why doesn't the repair option work? Are the BSoD and the failed recovery indicative of "bad drive"? Is BartsPE worth trying? PLEASE HELP!!!

I am building a system with a computer case that has a Side Air duct for a fan on the side panel.

I usually do 1 fan blowing cool air from the front, and 2 fans blowing out the back (1 regular and 1 pci blower for the video card).
Since this case has a side fan air duct - should I use it? If so, blowing in or out.
I have heard many people blow air in onto the cpu- but wont this disrupt the air flow since the cpu is blowing out?
If I did use it, how many other fans would you use (don't want too many for noise reduction)?
The case I purchased is here:

My computer had a heavy object fall on it. I had to do a system restore to get it to boot - but now there is no audio. I know the speakers are OK. I reinstalled the audio driver software. The computer doesn't recognize any speakers connected to either speaker port. What's a likely explanation?

Thanks.
