To be honest buying a good PC to play games has never been easier as most retailers provide the systems to handle the requirements these days.
Your current system might also only need an upgrade to handle
games as well, a good video card - extra ram.
Dell are always a good bet http://www.dell.com/
I would hold back for a PS3 though before splashing serious cash, the next gen stuff coming out leaves PC games way behind

If you want a real PC get a Falcon Northwest. Top of the line, more so than Alienware. Take it from an IT professional.

Go for a quad sli system alienware pc these are THE best pc's for gaming money can buy.
I'm talking 3 - 4 grand though but they really are the best..

Go to eBay and search 'computers'. Many of the sellers are businesses who do 'gaming' computers at realistic prices. You will be paying for performance rather than brand name. Choose anybody with a positive feedback over 99.5% over at least several hundred deals, preferably a Powerseller.

you cant go wrong with mesh computers(http://www.meshcomputers.com/),they do powerfull p.c,s starting at £600 but you should be looking at there sli(dual graphic cards)range and athlon fx-60 processors,you can even custom build your p.c,s so take your time and research all parts of a computer(hard drive,procesor,graphic cards,monitor)and build a p.c with power but to your specs
cube 24/7(http://www.cube247.co.uk/)are another great manufacturer of p.c,s and have won lots of awards for their top quality computers
whatever you do stay well clear of "dell" computers...they stink
