My computer had a heavy object fall on it. I had to do a system restore to get it to boot - but now there is no audio. I know the speakers are OK. I reinstalled the audio driver software. The computer doesn't recognize any speakers connected to either speaker port. What's a likely explanation?

Thanks.

when you dropped it on the computer it may of knocked the audio card slightly out of its slot , i suggest you shut down the machine, get a screw driver ( providing its not under warranty ) otherwise it will void your warranty !!

and take the side of the computer off and make sure to do this on a non carpeted surface ie the kitchen floor or somewhere that wont cause friction basically and touch the computer case as well.

Then unscrew the screw that holds the audio card in, take it out gently and then re insert it firmly making sure it is all the way in the slot.

screw the screw back in and put the side back on and screw that on and boot the machine back up ( sometimes I leave the side off until I know it is working )

If the machine is still under warranty then contact the manufacturer and either get them to fix it or let them know what you are doing and they should be ok with it, if not then just get them to fix it.

if you need more help or arent sure which one is your audio card post back :)

The "heavy" object may have knocked the connection loose from the audio card. Open it up and see if there's a loose wire (w/plastic connector) hanging around the audio card, especially if it goes to the speaker/s. Also, make sure the audio card is "seated" properly. Give it a push into its socket, make sure its even and fully engaged. And of course do this FIRST: make sure that if they are EXTERNAL speakers that they are still plugged into the back of the computer (audio card port). :)

your audio card may have been knocked loose by what ever fell on it, a component could have been damaged in the accident, just open the computer up and give the audio card a good push into the slot.
