I'm buying a new PC. What is Intel's newest processor called? Or is it out yet? I would go with Intel except AMD is significanlty less expensive. I'm not buying the PC for gaming but would like to run Photoshop and audio editing software without problems. What should I do?

In terms of overall price per preformance, the best bet would be to go with AMD's lineup of Duo core procs. They are very effecient in reagular daily processing jobs and in multimedia. Athlon 64 X2 is your best choice.

If you want absolute blistering performance and don't care about the price, then Intel has the proc for you. The newly released Intel Core 2 line up is absolute sheer processing power. Intel in the past has had serious problems with the Pentium 4 overheating. But the Core 2 Extreme is the most out of this world processor to date. It gives pure computing performance and very stable tempuratures. The Intel Core 2 Extreme was used in Maximum PC Mag's 2006 Dream Machine.

Either way, both companies provide consumers with a wide range of proc choices. Anyone won't dissapoint. Enjoy.

That's like asking if Ford is better than Chevy.

Look, it's mostly a matter of preference. Intel's newest CPU, the Core 2 Duo, does put everything out there to shame. However, you're going to get good performance with any of the latest offerings.

Intel had the lead in the early days from the Pentium and Pentium II. The Pentium III had some stiff competition when AMD released the first Athlon, but it still held a slight edge overall. Everything changed when the Athlon XP and Pentium 4 first hit the scene. The Athlon held the edge most of the time ever since.

Intel just released their newest CPU, the Core Duo (Conroe), which has a lot of promise. In just about every benchmark, it blows the Athlon 64/X2 out of the water. It's almost as if AMD and Intel are swapping places for the first time since the Pentium III. You may want to read the following article for more info:

The bottom line, however, is that both companies have strong offerings at the moment. Both have for the past few years. You really can't go wrong with either company...

I am an AMD fan myself, but Im a hardcore gamer. For what you are talking about doing I would say if you have the extra cash to spend, i would go with intel, but for the budget you will get more cpu for your buck with an AMD. All the reviews will show the Intel being faster for your uses but I dont know that you will be able to even see the difference with the naked eye, but in benchmarks only. Me personally, i would save a few bucks and get the AMD.
also AMD a clone?? how can that be, AMD uses a different technology then intel, AMD started out as a budget CPU, but by the time they got to the Athlon (P3) era they were making faster CPUs then Intel, and to this day have not lost there edge

Go with AMD. You will get alot more bang for your buck. Intel has good processors but they are overpriced. They have to pay for all the advertising somehow. You can get an Athlon for about the same price as a celeron and the athlon will run circles around the celeron.

I had a similar dilemma and after studying the situation ended up choosing a MAC with a Intel dual core processor over any PC with the Virus and crash prone Windows operating system

From reviews I've read, the new Intel "Core 2 Duo" p*sses all over AMD's processors (and all Intel processors before it).
