These days most of the motherboards are coming with PCI Express Slot instead of old AGP Slot. What is the reason behind it?

Fiddling around on newegg.com I came up with this...

This computer is basically for random internet stuff, word processor stuff, movie clips (viewing not editing), and playing World of Warcraft...

Alienware Aurora 5500, or Dell XPS 400? Tad pricey, but they both seem really great. I'm not much of a gamer, but game focused computers are powerful in general. Any advice?

12/05 we bought a Compaq Presario Pentium 4, on a salesman's advice. This is no gaming computer: several Jedi Knight games won't run well, nor will Oblivion even load, and tonight, Ice Age 2 quickly reaches a level where the creature is supposed to be traveling through an area that shows only a grey screen. I updated ActiveX after googling for ideas about the specific Ice Age problem. This did not fix the problem (we already had ActiveX 90c .)

What is wrong with/missing from the computer that it won't play these games? Age of Empire/Civ III run just fine on the computer, but not Age of Mythology, although maybe it's an expansion of that game that doesn't work.

Can we buy something to add to the computer to make these games play or would that almost be as expensive as getting new computers? If getting another one is best, what computer specs would you recommend for being able to just load Oblivion/Ice Age 2 and go? Macs? Only PCs?

Thanks so much for your time.

I am considering building my next computer from componants purchased from Frys or maybe NewEgg.com...

I think I have the expertise to do so, but I have never actully done it before, at least from scratch.

I plan on something close to the following specifications:

3.0 GHZ Processor (Intel or AMD, I do not personally have a preference)
1GB of Ram
160G HDD
512MB Vid Card (Geforce or something else, Video Game heavy)

I do not need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or any of that other stuff...

And I have roughly 500$ to $600 to spend.

My checklist would be:

Box
Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Hard Drive
Power Supply
Video Card
Network Card
Operating system (When does Vista come out?)
CDRW/DVD Drive
Interior cables to put is all together

Anything else I am missing?

My other option is of course to just buy from Dell or Gateway, but my problem is I can get what I want for about $600 but it looks like I would have to upgrade the video card as soon as it arrived.

I am considering buying a computer from either Dell or Gateway... Gateway seems about 25% more expencive for the same thing...

I was wondering if there are any New PC companies that provide a military discount?

How about Frys or NewEgg.com do they?

I know that video editing requires a lot of resources. I now have a P4 / 2ghz of speed, I increased my ddram to 1 gb. Also, I have a an All-In-One ATI Wonder Card, with 64 ram. What is the best video card out there for video editing for around 200 to 300 dollars, that also includes a TV Tuner?

It's so strange. For about two months now, when I click on "Turn Off Computer" from the start menu, the hourglass cursor comes up and it will stay like that until I click ctrl-alt-delete and click on "Shut Down" tab and then "Turn Off". BUT if I want to turn the computer off after it being on for about 10 to 15 minutes, it will shut down normal. Does anyone know a possible reason why it does this? And what can I do to fix it?
I'm thinking of doing a System Recovery as a last resort because I hate having to re-download all the songs and stuff that I've downloaded.

I need a video card, but it cannot be PCI-Express, or AGP. Just normal PCI. I'd like it to be under $60, and 128mb. and don't gimme a crappy answer, and say "ebay". i want a direct link to the card, or your answer will be deleted. and very important!!!!- it needs to be one off of this list- http://www.vistaultimate.com/graphics_cards.htm . if it's not, your answer will also be deleted.

Lets say i have a Computer that has Optical Drive : DVD±RW, 16x, Double Layer, Multi Format Drive on it. I can play DVDs, but now i am trying to burn a copy of some videos i downloaded onto a DVD+RW disc. How do i do this, what do i use, and do i need to download something that can, and if so, i need it to be 100% free and a non-trial offer. Do i use Windows Media Player and do i just put it in Data format, and if i do, will it play on a DVD player. The reason i am asking is because the file is large so i can't put in onto a CD R disc, and my friend who would like to watch it, can't use his computer because his computer is really old and it won't play Data.

I may have other questions, depending on your response.

About all i see on Windows Media Player is Data and Audio form, but not DVD format, unless putting into Data form onto a DVD±RW will allow it to play onto a DVD.
