My computer project is slowly coming together and now I have to decide upon a case. Aluminum sounds appealing because it's lightweight, but I wonder if it's better for the parts inside heatwise than steel. I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of steel v aluminim cases.

Also, are there any smaller than mid tower ATX cases that use an ATX mobo? I'd like to be space efficient if possible, but not at the cost of expansion/upgradeability and temperature.

I haven't kept myself up to date with the hardware scene lately. Why is it that Intel Dual Core processors (like the 805D) are so much cheaper than those from AMD. Also, why is it that AMD processors often have a smaller L2 cache?

Okay. My laptop overheated and fried. So I can't turn it on anymore. I don't plan on fixing it, but I would like the files on my laptop's HDD. How can I transfer over the files to my PC?

What would I have to do?

I'm trying to help a neighboor fix her computer. Here's the scoop: After she removed a RAM module that she was returning to a friend it stopped working. Here's what I observed: When I power on, there's no signal going to the monitor (checked monitor cable, and yellow standby light on monitor - these were fine, also monitor works fine on another PC). There is power going to the board (green light, fan and HD motor working) but no BIOS beeps to signal any possible failure. There are two RAM slots with a 256Mb SDRAM DIMM remaining which I tried in both slots just to be sure. I was thinking possible video card failure, however assume that BIOS would signal this. Maybe possible BIOS failure? Any suggestions or feedback?

I have bunt using thease cd-r's on a laptop, but for some reason my desktop is havin trouble. It is old, very old a compaq 5000 series. I'm looking to get a dedicated server that will run cpu intensive applications which hopefully will get a lot of traffic.

I have a choice between a celeron 2.0 and intel pentium 2.0 server. All other specs are the same. I know a celeron server is slower, but does anyone know just how much slower?

The celeron is significantly cheaper then the intel pentium server.

Every time I try to go on the computer, it stays on for about 10-15 minutes, then it says logging off and shuts down. I check for spyware, but none found. After it automaticaly shuts down about 2 times, I try to turn it on, but it wont start. The light with the picture of a battery under it on the front of the processor isn't lighting up anymore. I have a Compaq Presario 6000. How can I fix this problem?

I have decided upon an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, what is the best motherboard for it? I want to stay under $200.00 if possible. I will be doing multitasking, running programs such as Reason, Cakewalk, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and Photoshop. I want a mobo with expansion possibilities, DDR2 and that has and AM2 socket. Hardware I'd be using includes the usual cd/dvd burner, cdr player, 3 1/2 floppy, plus a soundcard, microphone and other hardware to use in the future to use with the music software. I need at least 4 USB connections

Is PCI being phased out? I notice less PCI slots of mobos these days.
