Every time I try to go on the computer, it stays on for about 10-15 minutes, then it says logging off and shuts down. I check for spyware, but none found. After it automaticaly shuts down about 2 times, I try to turn it on, but it wont start. The light with the picture of a battery under it on the front of the processor isn't lighting up anymore. I have a Compaq Presario 6000. How can I fix this problem?

there are some possibilities causing this.
One option is, that your computer is infected with a virus. You've scanned for spyware, but do you also have a virusscanner running?
The other option is, that there is a part of your computer malfunctioning.
The main indicator here is how the computer shuts down. If you get a message stating something like: this computer is shutting down, and there's a counter counting down to 0, it's probably a virus. You can cancel the shutdown progress by clicking Start - Run and type "shutdown -a" (without the quotes) in the box, folllewed by enter. That will cancel the shutdown progress and give you an opportunity to install or update your virusscanner and scan your computer for viruses. There are some good free virusscanners out there. AVG from Grisoft is a good example.

If the screen suddenly turns black, hardware failure is most likely. This will be harder to track, and, depending on the age of the computer, might not even be worth your while.

This could be a hardware issue. I've seen this a million times on the Dell Inspiron 5100 series. On those, the conector that your power cord plugs into in the back of your laptop gets loose and causes the battery not to charge anymore and runing on the A/C power is useless. The only fix is to get a new motherboard, which is really only an option if your computer is under warrenty. To test this try starting your computer with the battery out and only the A/C cord plugged in. If its dead, then theres your problem.

If your computer will show its startup graphics (the big COMPAQ at the beginning of the boot sequence) then you have a virus affecting your boot sector. Boot from a floppy.

To boot from a floppy:

ON A SEPARATE COMPUTER:

insert a floppy, preferably without any data (it will all be erased by the end)

right click on the floppy drive in My Computer

click "Format..."

Make sure the "Make System Disk" feature is on

Click format (or OK, i forget which)

once that is done, insert that disk into your infected computer, and it should boot up into a DOS prompt. You can insert your Windows Install Disk and recover it from there...

It could have a virus that shuts it down automatically at a certain time, I had that a couple of years ago, it realy sucked. Try a system restore to a date that it was working properly, if that doesn't work then try a system repair with you Winodws XP disk. If that doesn't work and you can't even turn the bloody thing on, You need to get it to a PC reapir place and have a professional look at it..

Assuming this is a laptop since you said battery light, make sure your laptop is getting charged. To check with the laptop turned off remove the battery, plug the laptop into the wall and turn on. If it does not turn on your charger is bad.

If you are running off the battery most laptops will auto-shutdown once the battery reaches a certain level.

Edit: Desktop, hmmm. That sounds more like a virus I dealt with before. Make sure your definitions are up to date. Then boot into safe mode and run a scan (hold f8 while booting up).

This should solve your problem.

Boot your computer from your Windows XP cd. When the menu comes up hit the R key to get to the Recovery Console.

If you have Recovery Console installed, select "Recovey Console" from the operating system list, on boot up.

Type
cd system32.

The prompt should now be
C:\Windows\system32

Type
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Restart the system.

Do you have any virus, sounds like you downloaded a Trojan, but I'm not a expert, just work with computers.
