I have decided upon an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, what is the best motherboard for it? I want to stay under $200.00 if possible. I will be doing multitasking, running programs such as Reason, Cakewalk, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and Photoshop. I want a mobo with expansion possibilities, DDR2 and that has and AM2 socket. Hardware I'd be using includes the usual cd/dvd burner, cdr player, 3 1/2 floppy, plus a soundcard, microphone and other hardware to use in the future to use with the music software. I need at least 4 USB connections

Is PCI being phased out? I notice less PCI slots of mobos these days.

This is the best one that we know about, so far: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131013 and don't buy from TigerDirect, unless you have no other choice. Also, don't buy the Asus motherboard that has the K8T890 chipset; the worst chipset ever made for Athlon 64's.

I'm happy with my MSI Neo-4.
It has Nvidia4 Chipset which is really good. It has all the hardware features that you listed

I would not say that PCI is being phased out completely. Alot of the PCI accessories have been replaced by USB, onboard-items (like sound), however there will still be a need for it.

You didn't say anything about a video card. AGP ports are being phased out in favor of PCI-Express (PCIe). You should watch out for this when purchasing a motherboard. Also some Videocards require their own Power directly from the Powersupply.

Have fun building your computer!!!

Dont buy Tigerdiret. I personally have had many DOA's and poor shipping packages from them. I highly recomend www.newegg.com. ASUS has the most overclocking options, and extras. Is it AM2 or socket 939? If its 939, DFI also makes great boards. They dont currentlly offer one for AM2. MSI is another good option for AM2.
