Because it's running Scandisk at startup, I'll assume you're using Win98 or Me.

If you are getting a scandisk operation every time it starts up, this is a strong indicator there are problems with your hard disk. Best thing to do is replace the hard disk, but you can get round it temporarily by running scandisk again and ask it to do a full surface scan of the disk. This will check for "bad sectors", as the system is probably hitting a bad sector when it reads the files off the drive.

A full surface scan will take a while, but let it complete. When it finds a bad sector, it will attempt to move what data it can out of there and mark the sector to prevent any more being written to it. It will most likely find more than one bad sector, so it's important to let it finish.

The severity of the damage to the drive is uncertain, but it seems to boot up ok, so the operating system is intact. Thats a good sign.

Summary - Get a new hard drive fitted.
or Run a full surface scan using scandisk

hope this helps.

does the scan disk work ok - or do you get any errors

try going into safemode - when you startup keep on tapping on f8 and choose safemode - try shutting down in this mode - if it shut downs ok then there is going to be a software problem that is either stuck in a loop and not allowing windows to shut down correctly

check the event viewer - click on start then run type eventvwr.msc then click on the application on the left - look for any errors - these may give you clues as to what program may be hanging do a google search for the problem

Sounds like you need an update of some type. I had a problem with shutting down my notebook. I ended up needing a BIO's update, which I got off the hp web site. After I downloaded the update, problem solved. Go to your manufactures web site and see if there are any update for your desktop.

Number one: is this a recent event, if so do a Restore to a date prior to the problem.

Number two: next time you open, go to 'my computer', right click Local Disk (usually C drive), open 'Properties', open 'Tools', open 'Error-checking', click 'check now'. If Automatically fix... and Scan for..... are ticked, untick them. If they are not ticked, tick them and click 'check now'. You will be told that this will be done the next time you start your computer. This will take maybe an hour but it should find the error and correct it..... good luck...........
