It's so strange. For about two months now, when I click on "Turn Off Computer" from the start menu, the hourglass cursor comes up and it will stay like that until I click ctrl-alt-delete and click on "Shut Down" tab and then "Turn Off". BUT if I want to turn the computer off after it being on for about 10 to 15 minutes, it will shut down normal. Does anyone know a possible reason why it does this? And what can I do to fix it?
I'm thinking of doing a System Recovery as a last resort because I hate having to re-download all the songs and stuff that I've downloaded.

System Recovery is the best idea. You won't loose the songs that you downloaded. You'll only loose software that you might have installed.

It sounds like there is nothing wrong and the puter is doing its normal thing. If you have been doing 'a lot of stuff' for a long period of time before turning off...... the puter has to get its ducks in a row before turning off. Wait it out. If you hurry the shut down w/ Ctrl - Alt - Del you stand a chance of getting corrupt files or other strange happenings. I think if you look at the hard drive indicator light you will see it blinking (reading and writting) and the hour glass indicates that the puter is doing something. The correct thing to do is: Wait It Out.

ok, I am fellow c- worker with the company microsoft.com, your computer maynot be shuting down right due to the fact that the computer is set not to shut down. Yes that is a choice for computers, what you need to do is click on your start botton in your toolbar, then open up your control panel, then open proformance and maintenance , then open up power options.

you probably do not have the superb motherboard drivers put in, meaning your gadget probably isn't operating optimally both. Reboot your pc, bypass into the BIOS setup show screen and verify the motherboard version you've, then acquire and installation the superb drivers from the manufacturers abode web page. good success!

Could be because your conputer is running to many programs.
Windows usually shuts them down to make sure the settings and information is saved.

Try making sure your not running any programs when you turn your computer off.

i think windows is not able to shutodwn because of some software running in your windows background ... and windows is not beeing able to do an end task for it ... so you can check on your control panel by going to add and remove programes and see any unnessarry software that you are not using and remove it ...

otherwise got start ---> run ---> then type msconfig ---> then press enter ----> then go to start up ---> then uncheck all the check marks on the checkboxs ... and then ok --> it will ask u to restart .. then this way it might work ...
