Desktops - June 2006

I had to use my computers recovery system to get my computer up and running after it crashed(?)..... all applications are still on it but i have lost all my pictures and music and documents. Is there anyway to get them back? Are they hiding somewhere????? the music i can reburn into itunes but the pictures are irreplaceable!!!!

My computer was completely freezing yesterday. I would have to turn it off and back on. It would work for a few minutes then do it again. I thought it was my my hard drive. I formatted my drive and re-installed windows. It froze up several times during installation. I had to restart it, then finally it finished and I was updating windows when it froze again. That was the last time my computer worked. I turned it off and turned it on, and now nothing comes on the screen. It doesn't even get to the boot screen for my to check my bios settings. I am wondering if anyone might know what could be causing this.

Macs cost a lot more than what I am ready or willing to pay, but I mean, i can save up for quality. i know how to use both a pc and a mac, but PC's are way cheaper. What is so much better about a mac is the basic question.

I was thinking of going with a laptop for college but I'm not sure 1500 will cover all that I want it to do (ie gaming, tv recording). What desktop specifications do you reccomend? AMD or Intel? Single processor or two? What graphics card? Keep in mind I want a large monitor also (so I can double it as a tv) so my budget is more like 1300 or less. Thanks alot!

Hello,
I recently installed RAM in my computer (512MB Kingston) and I have no idea if it's working. I already had RAM in my computer and wanted to add more due to all the highly demanding games coming out. So I found RAM in my computer, right? And I put the new RAM right next to the old RAM (also 512MB). Then I started the computer and looked in "My Computer" and then "System Information" it said I only had 512MB still :( P.S. I have a Gateway if that has anything to do with it.

I wanted a supercomputer being built from scratch instead of buying a brand new all ready installed and working computer. To build it, I would like everyone's suggestions on what type of supercomputer I should build (except games) so I can invest my money and time to build my very first supercomputer, built from scratch.

I have been able to write to certain DVD-R and DVD-RW 's in the 1x-4x speed range.
I am now the proud owner of 4 different brands of DVD-R's, but can not burn to any of them. (get error messages related to media issues)
I have heard you can not download an updated driver as this optical drive was OEM supplied. Is this an issue of more current media being incompatible with older drives? I have also installed Pinnacle Stidio version 9 SE and fail to burn. Any help on how to proceed greatly appreciated !

Problem: I had one RAM (256MB) on the motherboard, and it seems working and green LED is on. As I turn off the computer and took out the other RAM, which is also 256MB, from my closet that I have stored for long period of time, I install it correctly, but unsure if it is connected fully. So, I turn on the computer, and the green LED was completely off, only one stationary red is on. I rush to find out what happen to the Green LED, and it appears there's something's wrong. The conenctions seems connected, but no green LED on. Is anyone able to diagnose this problem and is anyone have solution for it?

What does that wattage really mean?

will a 300 w ower supply make your computer run slowered thatn a 400w?

Is it possible to have to much wattage, too little?

is it like "this is how much energy you have availiable" and as long as I don't have a jacuzzi hooked to my USB, it won't matter?

i'm trying to install a dvdrw but the inside of the machine is something iv'e never seen...instead of unscrewing...there are plastic clips holding the hardware in and i can't seem to unclip them...it looks like i may have to take the face of the machine off...does anyone know how to do this...by the way its a compaq presario.....

I have tried booting up in safe mode and clearing viruses. I have tried using "Last configuration" and i have tried to restore my pc to an earlier time but every time I try to boot the computer up normally the monitor just goes blank after the first windows xp screen comes up. I've bought a Gateway PC that has 1 SATA Hard Drive, I have all my backup on a IDE Hard Drive, so I opened the PC and realized that the only IDE slot is connected to the CDROM drive, can I use it to connect my IDE HD to restore the information to the SATA HD?
