I wanted a supercomputer being built from scratch instead of buying a brand new all ready installed and working computer. To build it, I would like everyone's suggestions on what type of supercomputer I should build (except games) so I can invest my money and time to build my very first supercomputer, built from scratch.

too early to build a supercomputer. wait until Intel releases the Core 2 Duo processor (code name Conroe), this will blow all AMDs out of the field.
ok, maybe it's just me, but i think this processor will be a quantum leap.

Desktop Platform
Desktops can deliver greater compute performance as well as ultra-quiet, sleek and low-power designs.

Intel is developing a desktop-optimized, dual-core processor based on the new, state of the art, Intel Core microarchitecture, codenamed Conroe. The Conroe processor will work within the 2006 Digital Home platform codenamed Bridge Creek, and the 2006 Digital Office platform, codnamed Averill. Conroe is targeted for introduction in the third quarter of 2006.

Intel will also deliver a quad-core (4 full execution cores) processor to the high-end desktop based upon this new microarchitecture, codenamed Kentsfield. Kentsfield is targeted for introduction in the first quarter of 2007.

Well, you say that your not playing games? Will that be true 5 years from now? I like to build toward the future as much as I can. I used to say,"I'll never do that with this computer" ! I'll never say "never" again! So, with that in mind, let's give it a whirl!

1. Has to have a Dual-Core Processor! (Intel or AMD)
2. Asus mobo, your choice.(AGP 8X compatible)
3. At least 2GB or more of Kingston RAM
4. 2-Western Digital 10,000rpm "Raptor" SATA HDD's.
5. 2-Plextor DVD+-RW's.
6. A 256MB or greater AGP video card.
7. A good set of 8:1 surround speakers.
8. A Sony Trinitron 21" LCD monitor.
9. An Industrial keyboard, to take the punishment that I would give to it!!
10. An optical mouse.
11. 600 Watt 37 Amp XG Vortec power supply to power all this stuff!
12. Cooler Master "Centurion 5" case with a red, blue or brushed aluminum bezel.
13 A Zalman CPU heat-sink/fan.
14. Artic Silver CPU grease.
15. A Floppy/Card reader combo.
16. Windows XP Pro with SP2 (Let the bugs fly out of Vista first!)

Man, I love to help spend other people's money! CHA-CHING!

Send me an email and tell me what you want to use the computer for. Gaming/3d graphics/word processing/office related work. Also I would need to know how much you want to spend.

Wait until they get the bugs out of the new 64 bit systems and then ask your question again
