As you can see by the first two answers, you're going to get lots of different answers, some not even close to each other. These days, hard drives and memory are relatively inexpensive. Unless you are critically financially constrained, I would buy the most in both categories. A 160 Gigabyte hard drive is fairly standard these days and 1 Gigabyte of RAM is usually more than adequate. What usually happens is that you are too conservative on the initial purchase and later you find that you really want to do things that require more and you have to upgrade which usually costs more than if you had bought it in the first place.

On the cheap side, 256 MB of RAM and a 20 GB harddrive should suit you just fine. But with the constant upgrading of technology, this stuff will soon be obsolete and too slow.
So without emptying your wallet and keeping your computer around a little longer, I recommend 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and an 80-120 GB Harddrive.

256 mb ram would b enough for u if dont play high configuration games and download much from internet. But if u take 512 mb RAM if would be much better for u.It's my recommendation that u should hav 512 RAM so that u might not hav problem to increase ur RAM for using any Big software.Regarding hard disk u can get 80 gb hardisk which would be more than enough if r a home user.

You need a minimum of 256mb of RAM now but having 512 or 1g is recommended. For a hard drive it is based on how big of a pack rat you are. I have a 40g drive and it never comes close to being full even with several games. Options for more space is a larger hard drive or a DVD burner, which I highly recommend.

i do the same things basically that you do and my pc runs fine with 512mb ram (you could buy 1GB incase you buy future upgrades or put more demanding programs on your pc) as for hard drive a low end games + word docs (wich are extremely small) +music, etc. you would probably be best with a 60 or 80 gigabyet hard drive. 60 gig for the price, 80 gig for the future space you may need in the future.

I would say a minimum of 512MB RAM but preferrably 1GB. Hard Drive space you could probably do fine with an 80GB Hard Drive but you may as well go ahead and get the 120GB since it is usually not that much more if you are buying a prebuilt.

it seems like 512 would be enough for you if you download music in moderation. i'd go for the higher number just to be on the safe side. you might start downloading an excessive amount of music or start playing high end games one day.
