Hi,
The two processors use totally different CPU (processor) sockets so they are not compatible. In addition, the pinout (the input and output signals) are on different pins on the CPU. There are other reasons outside of the CPU socket and pinout such as the support chipset on the motherboard.
The easiest thing to do is to verify that you can not get a faster AMD CPU (if you provide more information on your motherboard - make and model #, we can see if a faster CPU will work as the cheapest solution to a new CPU and motherboard). In many cases, the problem is not the speed of the CPU (unless you are a gamer), it is the amount of memory you have, the # of processes starting up at bootup (a lot of those cute little icons in the lower right part of the screen are NOT your friends. They eat up some basic sections of memory that can cause your computer to appear bogged down.).

As stated above, it's not possible because they are not compatible. However, you can keep your setup and modify your K7 CPU. Look up some guides on overclocking K7 processors. I've personally modified my K7 CPU and gained 50% clock speed. Some of the older K7 models are better because they have not been factory locked. It's quite simple, you just fill and cut some bridges on the chip. Some older K7 Duron have been known to reach 2.5GHz.
Your other option is to upgrade to a new CPU and motherboard. Intel and Amd are having a price war this summer, so I recommend you wait a few months. Look for prices to drop 50% on most processors by August.

You will need to purchase a different motherboard. The socket that holds an AMD K7 is different in shape and size from a socket that holds a Pentium. You can not switch between them.

The Pentium would be a better choice. But... if you compare an Athlon 64 to a 3.0ghz p-4, and they have same l2, the 64 bit is actually quite an useful thing. The next get windows (vista) will have alot more features for the 64bit version.

NO, THE MOTHERBOARD CAN NOT SUPPORT IT , OR ELSE YOU BURN THE PROCESSOR, just look for a new intel or pentium board that the Piv processor can use,
