You might have problems with spyware, I would suggest downloading spybot seach and destroy, and lavasoft's adaware to help you get your computer back up to speed. You can find them online for free.
You should also defrag your system. Go to Programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter in the start menu, and scan your drives. Those things might help you out. Good luck!

What's most likely is that the operating system ( Windows XP) on the computer has gotten a load of garbage information mixed up with the data it uses to configure itself, so it's breaking down. The easiest fix is to reinstall windows, so it starts afresh with everything new and working again (in theory). Unfortunately, what you do to reinstall XP depends on where you have the installing program, to be honest I've only had to do it twice, and can't remember all the steps you need to take, if you've got a friend whose good with computers, they should be able to do it quite easily though.
The computer may actually freeze while trying to reinstall XP, this would likely be a sign that reinstalling XP isn't going to solve your problems. It might be there's a deeper problem with the system, for example the CPU might be overheating, or a harddrive might have broken or a ram chip or anything. If reinstalling XP doesn't work, it's probably easiest to take it to a store and ask them to have a look at it.
EDIT - Another advantage of reinstalling XPis that all adware and spyware programs and viruses will be gone. You might still have some infected files, but they won't do anything bad until you open them, so if you run a virus scanning program over all your files before you sue them you should be safe.

What a nice cutie gal we got here that needs help. Sweet! Your computer is driving you crazy? I would recommend beating the computer up until the computer stops being insane :P Just kidding. I may have a solution to this.
If your computer goes insane, its probably your harddrive being corrupted and you might need to buy a new harddrive. Other answers they posted to answer your question isn't accurate, as I have known about harddrives and the motherboard for quite a while. Also, you might want to check the RAM and see if it is damaged or not. If the RAM seems working fine, it probably be the harddrive attacking the motherboard and maybe corrupted. So, I recommend you to just take it to the computer service place where you bought your PC and have them look at it, and they will just help you find what's wrong with it. I hope this helps.

Being you know almost nothing, you probably have unsafe browsing habits and picked up some bad things.
If you can, download AVG free antivirus (Look up AVG free on Yahoo) and Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware (Also look it up on Yahoo). Install it, and the updates, then scan your computer. If you cannot download the things, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do the free scan.
The problem is most likely this: You've encountered spyware and viruses that infected your computer. They are running and slowing your computer down.
You need to scan and delete all of the incriminating programs. If you still have your XP installation disk, or a repair disk that came with your computer, stick it in, restart. Then format and reinstall XP.
If you need to do the above, the extreme solution, makesure to back up all your important files, as they will be erased if it's formated. Good luck. If you need any help, email me, you can reach me from here - http://www.blackcanoflysol.talkhost.info/contact.php

The computer might have a virus. I bet you have Limewire or stuff like that. That really makes your computer go insane and don't work properly.
My suggestion? Try reinstalling Windows again with the disc that came with your computer.

you might want to try running your antivirus software to check for a virus.
if that doesnt show any viruses, you might have lots of adware/spyware. This is normal and found on most computers. its a pain because other apps are slowing you down at the benefit of the adware/spyware
get it off your pc free, go here> http://www.egrab.com/answers/links/ad_aware_se.htm

If you are willing to save all your important information onto a flash drive or something, reformatting is always a recourse.
All you need is your backup windows cd and a guide to reformatting.
