Hello,
I recently installed RAM in my computer (512MB Kingston) and I have no idea if it's working. I already had RAM in my computer and wanted to add more due to all the highly demanding games coming out. So I found RAM in my computer, right? And I put the new RAM right next to the old RAM (also 512MB). Then I started the computer and looked in "My Computer" and then "System Information" it said I only had 512MB still :( P.S. I have a Gateway if that has anything to do with it.
Thanks,
Eddie

I'll give this a shot. I've installed RAM thousands of times in desktops, laptops and huge enterprise servers. It's all the same. If you installed RAM in an available slot and Windows can't see it, there are only two possibilities:

1. New RAM is bad
2. RAM dimms are incompatible (some hardware like HPs, IBM etc don't know about Gateway, won't take two of a certain type for a variety of reasons)
3. New RAM is not supported by the board (size?)
4. Board only takes 512MB (Certainly not a Windows limitation)

Try this:

a. Switch the dimms around
b. Take the old dimm out and leave the new one in
c. Try to find the part number printed on the board. You will take this number and call GateWay and find out what RAM is compatible with the machine model type. Most likely it is the FSB (Front Side Bus) speed or other speed issue.

RAM usually works in pairs and it also depends how many slots you have.
It's not the computer that matters but rather the motherboard on your PC.
Look at the description of your computer and see what type of RAM came with it or look up in setup (pressing F2 or delete usually works).
Also, RAM has varying speeds so make sure you get the appropriate memory sticks as well.
(e.g two 512MB RAM will equate to 1 GB of memory..if you need 512, you may put 2 sticks of 256MB each).

Check the BIOS settings. Gatreway is proprietary system you may need to flash the BIOS with an upgrade. Look through Gateways sight first. Make sure there are no compatibility problems with the Kingston RAM.

You should contact Gateway. If this helps Gateway has a pretty bad reputation for mediocre products these days. And terrible customer support. But contact them. Also, make sure it it secured in there properly, and that you got a ram chip that actually fits. Not all RAM fits every computer.

Download the software from this link. It will tell you everything that is in your system, its free and has no adware or spyware. If it reports only 512 megs then you have purchased the wrong ram stick.

1. maybe your motherboard does not support that much RAM (1GB) and/or the CPU is obsolete (1+GHz)
2. make sure the RAM is seated properly on the motherboard

Double check the chip again to make sure it's all the way in
