I didn't use the cd's-- they never finished transfering the data - there was an error on the third one.... I just pressed F10 to use the recovery system when it prompted me to. the computer came on and said could not start windows.

Odd, the recovery system doesn't touch any of your (data) files, like pics, documents, etc. It's supposed to return the PC back to a state on a previous date, loosing all program installations you might have done in between. Are you sure the programs are still there, and it's not only their icons or menu shorcuts? (try running them).
I think somehow you may have created a new user account, and you're logging into an empty My Documents folder. Logging in as Administrator, look in My PC -> C:, and open the Documents and Settings folder. If not visible, in the Windows explorer clic the Tools menu then Folder options... -> View. In the hidden files and folders section, select Show all hidden files and folders. Now try to open the Documents and Settings folder, where you should see at least one user folder. Try opening each one of them. They should have either a "My Documents" or "Documents of " folder. Open these folders, and hopefully your data is in one of them. Drag them into your new "My Documents" (or My Pictures, etc) folder.
Hope this helps.

Your recovery system could have kept a backup of the point before you recovered depending on whether or not you used a backup type software or just the recovery CD. If software, try to revert back to the old one. Otherwise, you probably can't.

Absolutely NOT!!! When you use the restore CD's like the ones that come with COMPAQ and HP computers it reformats and reinstalls the operating system just like the day you purchased it. You should of received a warning telling you of this which you had to acknowledge.

unfortunately, no. the only way you can recover the pictures now would be to send the hard drive out to a data recovery company. this usually costs in the thousands of dollars(us). don't get angry with me, but..... back up early, back up often .....sorry to have ruined your day.

Sorry, always back up your files. Those files still have traces in your hard drive. You can have a computer expert to excavate it for you.
