The best AMD 64 bit processor beats Intel's best by about 15-40% depending of the test even on the 32 bit version of Windows. The other processor makes you should watch are Via and Transmeta but they are not great performers, what they are good at is power consumption or the lack thereof and the new generation of mini tablet PCs or UMPCs or Origami-es or whatever you want to call them makes use of them

First of all AMD it's not a processor it's a company.
Pentium it's made by Intel and AMD makes Athlon and Athlon64 CPU's as a competing product for the Pentium 4.

Although I'm an Intel fan I have to admit that at this point AMD make better processors in terms of performance and power consumption.

Since your question is about the best desktop processor I would say that the best now it's the Athlon64 FX 4800+ (Toledo) (if money is no object for you, that is)

AMD processors are 64 bit, whereas Pentium are 32 bit. Most computer software coming out in the next few years will run on 64 bit processors. Stick with AMD. I have an AMD 64 X2 4200 processor for my home-built pc.

I'm on with AMD. I'm using AMD Duron. It doesn't give me any problem though its 3 yrs old now. Other AMD processor are Opteron, Sempron, Turion and Athlon....
I say AMD processor is much better regarding that it's cheaper and with equal performance with Intel.

I would say AMD, because they use less pipes to run the information through meaning it runs faster than the pentium.

It has to be Intel. Greater compatibility. There used to be a price performance advantage to Amd but Intel has been able to trump this advantage with its recent offerings.
