I want to take up running but whenever I try I get a very sharp pain in my side and need to stop. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how to fix that? I really want to start a sensible running routine. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just started running a week ago..( more like jogging I am trying to lose weight and get in shape) I ran just over 1.5 miles today before I had to quit. How many weeks do you recommend training before running a 5k?

I am just getting back into serious running. I have been making little runs for the past three months of about three to four miles, but the last couple of weeks have been tacking on the distance with consecutive runs of 6, 8, 9, (day off), and a half-marathon and change today. (13.79...stopped because I was home, but I still had gas in the tank.) My times were brutal...11:20 pace for the miles, and I finished the entire run today at 2:29'27". I'm considering picking up a training program mid stream, going M-4, T-10, W-4, Th-10, Fri-4, and a long run of probably 14 or fifteen on Saturday.

My question is this--I let my body go, and am still working off a lot of fat, though distance running has never been a problem. Given the shape I'm in, (5'10", 220-ish, BMI of over 25%), can I make it in time? I'm obsessive about this now, enjoying it a GREAT deal, and this isn't my first go round with serious training--I just don't know if my times are going to cut the mustard at Chicago.

I'm 20 and about 13 stone. Last few months i have been jogging consistently 6 days a week on a 400 metre running track. I started off running 4 laps without a rest then 2 more. Every week i had 1 on, so for eg the next week i would run 5 laps no rest then 2 more. I am aiming to run 12 laps(3 miles) in 22minutes as i am joining the royal marines very soon. However i have encountered a problem, last week i had gotten up2o 9 laps no rest 11 in total, this week i was meant to be on 10 laps no rest 12 in total but i have been stopping after 5 or 6, i have noticed its too hard and i am feeling more tired and less motivational? Does any1 no why this is happening and what i should do? Any informative help would be much appreciated thanks...

My friend is planning to run a marathon and is also going to run a few other races in preparation. I would like to give her a gift that is running-related. If I can't find one perfect item, I'm also considering putting together a gift basket of items (water bottle, energy bar, running socks, etc.) Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks.

I started a new running program called From Couch to 5k. It is designed to build you up to running 3 miles over a period of a couple months.

I ran on Monday and I stretched first but I think I might have overstretched my calves because it hurts just to walk. (The calves fell 'short' for lack of a better term. They don't hurt normally but when they stretch even a little its really tight and painful) Should I push thorugh it and run again today like the program says, or is this something I should let heal some first. I don't want to take a break so early in the program (I have only done it for about a week). But I don't want to make it worse either. I still need to be able to go to work after my run. Any solutions.

I have 3 hours of gym for summer school, and I was wondering if any of you guys know if running slower, faster, etc, would help me run a mile without stopping? Or...maybe I just need more practice? The problem for me is just breathing by the end of the 4th lap.

So I have the opportunity to run half a marathon or 5 K. The thing is I have only started training 2 weeks ago just for fun. I haven't had any exercise for 5 years at all. I did a 5 K race and that took me 35mins. For the shape I'm in I think it's alright.

Now I get to choose to do 5 K or half a marathon on June 24. 5 K to me doesn't seem like much. I would love to try the half marathon, we have 3 hours...but..can I do it?

I train my running 8K 5 days a week. What do you guys think? am I do out of shape do even attempt the half marathon and what if I can't finish? I feel shameful for how people will see me and also how do I get back to the finish if I can't finish it and the course closes

Pain during workout... how many people here are encouraged or discouraged by pain during their workouts? Personally, knowing that I'm trying to get into peak condition for soccer, I can mentally push myself at least SOMETIMES when the pain doesn't discombobulate my senses (especially during sprints)
.

It's amazing how many people I speak to about me running and they are totally against it. They never really have a good reason as to why, but they always say, "Can't you just walk?" I would seriously like to know what are the cons to female long distance runners.

The race I'm thinking of is in December. Right now I run about four miles at a stretch and am in otherwise good shape. Will the training be too strenuous in that amount of time? Or is it do-able?

I recently quit smoking (yay for me) and I attempted to start running again, and miserably failed!! When I was in highschool I ran "cross country." So for the most part atleast ran 3 miles a day at min. However, at 26yrs of age, I have tried to start running again and I can't even jog on my treadmill for longer than 2 min. I wouldn't really consider myself that out of shape. I'm 26 and 5'8 135lbs. Since I have quit smoking I have gained 10lbs and want it off!!!! I know running/jogging is one of the best ways to do that. I eat pretty healthy. Do my best to stay away from carbs, and I am on the South Beach diet. Talk alot during the day and I drink atleast 3 bottles of water a day. I need some help from experienced people!!! I have a deadline...and its approaching quickly! Sept. 1 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been running cross country since my sophmore of Highschool. I run sprints in track since Freshmen year and My coaches suggested that I do XC to stay in shape . the thing is I'm pretty good in track I earn some medals. The thing is now I'm a senoir and I'm about to start pre conditioning for X.C and I have never earned a medal in X.C. I've gotten first place at every dual meet except one (when coach lets me run J.V) We dont get medals for dual meets. The thing is I'm really a varsity runner but I suck at 3 miles .The best time I've ever gotten is 22.59 my usual time is around 25-28 mins .I'll be happy to just get one medal In X.C before I leave highschool.I try really hard but by the time I get finished with 2 miles I'm wheezing And the top half of my legs are sore. I really want a medal.

I read that some guys did this and it got them faster. Put 2 and a half ankle weights on each foot and run in place for 30 sec. with high knees then rest for 30 sec and do 5 sets of those u think it works.
