XC is short for "cross country", the sport in which you run trails for distances of 3 miles or more. The X comes from an abbreviation for "Christ" or "cross". So, you will sometimes see the following abbreviations:
LAX = LaCROSS
Xsect = CROSS section
Xmas = CHRISTmas
Xtina = CHRISTina
Xtal = CRYSTal (also commonly used in chemistry)

The use of the 'X' is thought to originate from a dream of Emperor Constantine when he united the pagans and the Christians. Since then, it has been widely used for just about any applicable abbreviation.

And yes, XC is generally very good for sprinters, most definitely for long distance runners. It helps keep you in shape during your off season, and it helps build endurance, which is especially important if you want to run in more than one event.

xc is a shorter way of sayign cross counrty meanign you run distances from 2-10 miles and it is better for sprinters becasue at the end of every meet you should sprint really hard to get to the finihing line...after training youll get better and it keeps you nice into shape..you could run in mud, up hills, through fields anythign adn it will be considered cross country running
i hope i helped you a little better to understand wht XC is.

The hilly, uneven terrain strengthens muscles that aren't worked as hard on flat, short surfaces.
