It sounds like an interval workout.

You are supposed to do 8 repititions of a 400 m run. That is one lap around the track.
Warm up first, then run a lap at about your mile pace, maybe a little quicker. Rest for about a minute, or until your heart rate returns to about 70% max. Run another lap at the same pace. Repeat. Do this until you have done 8 laps.

This workout is designed to increase your speed. It is a tough workout, and you'll be sore tomorrow, but next fall, it will pay off.

A 400 is one lap around a track, which ia a 1/4 mile. 8 means doing it 8 times. That woud be 2 miles.

If you are talking about a workout, it would be a type of speedworkout. You would run 1 lap around a track at a fast pace. After you finished you would have about a 1 minute rest. You would do this 8 times. One lap is 400m. This leads to the name 8x400.

I believe it means that each of the 8 people on the relay team runs 400 meters. 400 meters is once around the track.

Do you mean the 4x800? the 4x800 is where 4 people run an 800 one after another handing off a baton in between exchanges of turns of running. You only run 2 laps.

Umm, that would be a 3200 m relay, and I've never run a relay with 8 people and have never heard of it, but I think it's 8 people and they each sprint 400 m. (one lap)

Well a 4x200 is a 200 relay with four people, so a 8x400 should be a 400 relay with eight people. It's 3200m. Good luck running it [if you are]!

I've never heard of an 8x400 relay, but if it's a relay, the answers above me are sufficient. If you meant to write 4x800, it's 4 people running two laps apiece. Some other relays are: 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x400, weight-man (thrower's 4x100), sprint medley, and distance medley
