Having large and muscular thighs will help you at the start of running of course, but a lot of other things will help make you quicker. If you try to get stronger thighs, you can also try to make the rest of your body stronger.
As a sprinter and jumper, I have to hit the weight room at least once if not twice a week. I've found that the overall more muscle tone helps a lot.
Try getting strong everywhere else too! Good luck.

And how do you 'get' strong thighs..
By training. Working on your fitness. You don't try and get strong leg muscles to be faster, you work hard, perhaps running a mile everyday, and they develop over time. You see gradual change, but again it isn't easy it's hard work like everything in life.

what do you mean by thighs?
do you mean just quads or the whole upper leg?
and by the way, calves are NOT the most important sprinting muscle. you need to have a certain level of calf strength to maintain proper form, but the powerful drive comes from your glutes and hamstrings...

having strong thighs makes you a more agile runner and a more powerful runner...but if you want to be plain fast, work on your calves, ankles and glutes. ever see a sprinter with no butt? lol

If you are an ultrarunner, strong thighs will help you traverse mountainous terrain where you have drastic ascents and descents.
