As an avid marathon runner, there's a number of things that I always need, but most of them are things I like to get on my own because there's a particular brand or style I like. Some of them include the following:
Running clothes (shoes, shirt, shorts)
Water bottle
GPS watch
Sunglasses
MP3 player
Energy bar/gel
Sports bag
Any of the above, I would *not* recommend getting her because she will probably be unhappy with your choice unless you already know her preferences. A gift card will allow her to get them herself though.
Among the things I always seem to need/want but doesn't seem to matter which brand is the following:
Running socks (synthetic material)
Souvenir from marathon (e.g., jacket, shirt, framed picture from marathon photographer)
Body Glide (to prevent chaffing)
Gift certificate to massage
Marathon stick (for massage)
Foam roller (for stretching IT band)
"Running" shirt (says something like "Runners Do It Better", "got marathon?", "Run Like a Girl")
I think that's all that I can think of. I hope that one or a few of those will help. Good luck~!

Twenty five years ago I recieved a home spa whirlpool for the bathtub and it has been a cherished possession.
Every tough workout I use it and my recovery times are reduced enormously. Hot water and epsom salt and these lovely bubbles do the trick big time!

If she doesn't have one already, one of the GPS watches. They are fantastic as a training tool and for helping to keep your pace during the race.
