I am just getting back into serious running. I have been making little runs for the past three months of about three to four miles, but the last couple of weeks have been tacking on the distance with consecutive runs of 6, 8, 9, (day off), and a half-marathon and change today. (13.79...stopped because I was home, but I still had gas in the tank.) My times were brutal...11:20 pace for the miles, and I finished the entire run today at 2:29'27". I'm considering picking up a training program mid stream, going M-4, T-10, W-4, Th-10, Fri-4, and a long run of probably 14 or fifteen on Saturday.

My question is this--I let my body go, and am still working off a lot of fat, though distance running has never been a problem. Given the shape I'm in, (5'10", 220-ish, BMI of over 25%), can I make it in time? I'm obsessive about this now, enjoying it a GREAT deal, and this isn't my first go round with serious training--I just don't know if my times are going to cut the mustard at Chicago.

For an october 1/2 or marathon you have time, most training programs are 16 - 22 weeks depending on whose schedule you use. I would not get to hung up on weight or your time.

Eat properly and your weight will take care of itself as long as you control what you eat and balance everything with the right amount of carbs, protiens and fats.

If your goal is to run a 1/2 or full, then concentrate on getting your milage up I recommend Jeff galloway's or John Stanton's programs. Do the Full to complete program and you will do fine, those programs will get you across the line in 4:30 - 5:00 hours.

If you are looking to do faster, you may want to take weight off but I don't recommend training for a marathon and dieting. You will loose body fat running the longer distances as that is the nature of running. Typically I loose 4 - 5 lbs over the course of training. When I ran my first 1/2 I started at 212 lbs. finished about 208 by the race.

I did my first marathon and my weight from 208 to 203/204. And I am hoping as I get ready for the fall I will loose another 4 - 5 lbs for my next 1/2.

Personally, I think it's a little ambitious to attempt a marathon in October. Why???

1. You are out of shape
2. You are carrying more weight than is good for you
3. You'll have to increase your mileage by too much

Your legs, knees, and ankles will undergo lots of stress just from the mileage, plus adding the overweight factor will really be tough on your lower body, not to mention your back.

I'd rather see you continue gradually thru the summer slimming down and working slowly toward a week like this:

Fr 3
Sat Rest
Sun 9

Get more serious around March. Good Luck whatever you do.
