I recently quit smoking (yay for me) and I attempted to start running again, and miserably failed!! When I was in highschool I ran "cross country." So for the most part atleast ran 3 miles a day at min. However, at 26yrs of age, I have tried to start running again and I can't even jog on my treadmill for longer than 2 min. I wouldn't really consider myself that out of shape. I'm 26 and 5'8 135lbs. Since I have quit smoking I have gained 10lbs and want it off!!!! I know running/jogging is one of the best ways to do that. I eat pretty healthy. Do my best to stay away from carbs, and I am on the South Beach diet. Talk alot during the day and I drink atleast 3 bottles of water a day. I need some help from experienced people!!! I have a deadline...and its approaching quickly! Sept. 1 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job on quitting.
I think you should be patient on getting back into running. You have accomplished the hardest part of it, and that is the motivation to want to start doing it again.
I think if you can only go for 2 minutes on the treadmill then you are going too fast. You can't expect to get right back into the same pace you ran in high school. Even if you set the pace really slow thats fine. Its only temporary and you will get better if you keep it up. If you still have to stop after a few minutes that is fine, just walk. there are plenty of walk/jog workouts you can do. Just keep up the motivation.
Oh. Diets don't work. If you just eat a balanced diet of complex carbs (whole wheat or whole grain), good fat protein (like fish), fruit, and tons of vegetables you'll definately lose weight. Theres no need to diet.

Congrats on quitting smoking! About the running thing, it's expected that you be out of shape since you haven't run cross country in high school. Smoking has probably done a number on your lungs so the best thing for you to do is probably to start off slow and pace yourself. Increase the length of your running work out every week so you can build up endurance and lung capacity. As you start running longer the weight will start coming off. Good luck!

One of the easiest ways to set your body into motion with running is to set a goal with running. The goal I am speaking of is a road race, in your case, a 5k. On CoolRunning.com they have a program called C25k (Couch-to-5k). It will get you up and out and allow you to get trained and ready to run in a 5k.

This would be my advice. Knowing that you have something to run for other than just getting in shape really helps you. It is especially helpful if you go ahead and find one now, and put the money down so you are already registered.

After that...get off the couch and hit the roads. It is an easy training program and will help you lose weight if you eat right along with it.

I heard that it's best to swim after smoking, as it excercises all parts of your body, with out having to deal with the heat. If you're going to start running again, I'd say 1 mile a day is fine. Try special K twice a day. it works.

same boat.. i recently quit smoking and started running as well. At first I couldnt go as far but now run 2 miles everyday. The best thing to do is keep it up and do it as often as possible, when you get tired push yourself and you will get your second wind, dont let your body trick you.

Congratulations on quitting smoking. It's a great step forward.

Just be patient with running. Improvement will come before you know it. Slowly increase your mileage as you get fit, and you'll make that deadline with no problem.

I wrestle so I know how to lose weight. Honestly, you dont need a diet, that's just a way to make you lose money. You need carbs to give you energy to keep you running longer to make you lose more weight. If you want to lose weight, just eat healthy and dont pack on the proteins....as they say, muscle weighs more than fat.
